Obviously I can't focus or zoom the lens since those are lens controls. Don't think I have an ability to set exposure shift either. The things I think I am unable to do are change mode (since that's the hard dial on the camera, and change AF-mode since that is also a hard dial on the camera). Basically most of the camera controls as would be accessible via the Fn button on the camera are accessible though a clickable on-screen display on the RCC window, and I can use - and + buttons which are there to increase/decrease the selected camera paramater. I can navigate to and adjust on MBP using mouse - such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO. Mode, and connected to the USB port on the MBP, I can:Ĭhange key exposure parameters on the A900 remotely - i.e. I have used RCC quite a bit before - probably again under Snow Leopard, but under Lion it is still there, and I have just checked - it is I got my MBP in late 2009 and probaly first installed RCC then in late 2009 or early 2010 from Sony Europe's website. This will have been installed originally under Snow Leopard I would think - I really don't remember when I most recently installed/upgraded RCC, but the above version is dated copyright 2008. Just to give input, and I don't necessarily dispute what you are saying, but. MacBookPro 2.4 GHz Santa Rosa from late 2007 here.with OS10.6.8. Works like a charm here the few times I use it. You can actually release the shutter from camera, and change shutter and aperture (you cannot change focus remotely, tough). no need to "unplug and plug" the USB after each shot. Cam needs to be in "remote control" (don't know the exact words, but the other otion is "USB storage") mode for the USB connection.

This is exactly what the RCC software by Sony for Mac which came with the CD ROM with your camera is for. Not only is it a pain to have to remove the USB cable after each exposure and turn the camera off and on, it also introduces the possibility of moving the scope just enough so that the following photo won't align properly for stacking with succeeding photos. Once focus is satisfactory, the procedure involves taking a number of exposures of up to 5 minutes each, downloading each to the computer as it's taken so that it can be examined while the next exposure starts.

I want to be able to connect the Alpha 900 to my MacBook for astrophotography, which usually requires taking a number of photos and inspecting them on the PC screen to ascertain focus, tweaking the focus after each exposure.

Back when I first tried to do this a few years ago I just knew it as remote camera control and it worked great on my Windows PC (the only thing I've found that works better in Windows since I got my MacBook a few months ago). I guess I should have made this more clear.and it's only been recently that I've come across the tethering term so it's not a word I think of for what I'm doing.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this expected behavior with the Alpha DSLRs and a newer model MacBook Pro with Lion or is there a problem with a fix or am I simply missing something?
Under neither scenario can the camera be used with turning it off, disconnecting the USB cable from the MacBook and turning the camera back on. If I set the USB connection option to 'Mass Storage' and connect the camera to the MacBook, the 'Initializing USB connection." message is displayed momentarily on the camera's screen and the MacBook Image Capture program shows the CF card as a device. The LCD screen on the camera shows 'Initializing USB connection." for as long as I care to leave the camera on. If I set the USB connection option to 'Remote PC' and connect via USB cable to the MacBook, the Apple Image Capture software opens, showing the camera under 'Devices'. I've tried to connect both an Alpha 700 and an Alpha 900 to my MacBook Pro to use the MacBook as a storage device.
